Slaughtering animals
When you hear the word slaughter you often think of a huge truck full of animals, heading to the freezing works, with stressed and scared animals. But it doesn’t have to be like this! We are one example of how animal friendly this process can be!
Animal friendly rearing
Once a calf is born, mostly out in the paddock, it can grow up together with its mum and all the other cows here on the farm, choosing to be inside or outside at any time. Calves can play with each other, can drink as much milk as they would like, eat grass or hay and some soy. The end result of this rearing are happy, healthy animals, and this can be noticed also when tasting the meat. It has a beautifully intense flavor and a juicy consistency.
Transport to the butcher
We love our animals. This relationship does not end on the day when they need to be butchered. About an hour before transporting them, we give the animal free access to the trailer, so that it can get used to it and calm down. We transport each animal on their own, with tractor and trailer, to the slaughter house, only 2 km away. Once there things go fast – the butcher kills the animal inside the trailer with one targeted shot. The animal does not even know what is happening, and has not been under any stress.
Dissection of the animal on Bolderhof farm
The animal hangs for 2 days at the slaughter house. After the official meat inspection we bring it back to the farm. Our butcher dissects it on the farm, and the meat is rested for optimum time. Then our customers can buy the meat fresh or frozen in the farm shop, through our online shop or at the market.
Animal friendly
As you can see, we love our animals, and want to see them happy and healthy. We do everything for them, so that they never need to be under stress. If you want to eat meat, you have to accept that it means the death of an animal. When you get meat from Bolderhof farm, we assure you that the animal had a great life, right to the end, and has been kept as animal friendly as possible.
